PHLOX
POLEMONIACEAE
This is a varied genus, ranging from the mat-forming alpine species, through woodland dwellers, to tall upright border plants. There is also a selection of annual varieties available. Some are highly scented.
There are over 60 deciduous and evergreen species, native, with the exception of one, to North America.
Conditions vary dramatically with the species. Woodland varieties do best in part- or full shade with humus-rich soil; alpine species require full sun and good drainage, while the border varieties grow well in fertile, reasonably moist soil in sun or part shade.
