Bedstraw is a genus of both annuals and perennials, and includes some common weeds. The common names Goose Grass, Cleavers and Sweet Woodruff are also applied to certain species. Most produce whorls of narrow leaves topped with clusters of white, yellow, green or red flowers.

There are about 300 species growing in most of the temperate regions of the world, predominately in Europe and Turkey. They are found in a range of habitats, including woodland, hedgerows and meadows.

They will grow in any soil conditions in sun or part shade. Most varieties colonise quickly and make good ground cover.
