OPHIOPOGON
ASPARAGACEAE
Mondo Grass is grown for both its grass-like, ground-covering foliage and its spikes of lilac or white bell-shaped flowers, followed by blue-black berries. The foliage is often variegated or attractively coloured.
There are over 65 evergreen species, native to the area from China and Japan down to Borneo and the Philippines, but most of these are not hardy in Britain and therefore not in cultivation.
They are happy in average garden soil and prefer part-shade, but will grow in sunnier positions, given a moister soil.
