This is a popular garden perennial, with spikes of hanging, tubular flowers throughout the summer, available in a wide variety of colours.

There are more than 250 species, native mainly to North and Central America, where they grow in a wide range of habitats from open prairies to mountainous alpine regions.

Most modern cultivars are best grown in fertile, but well-drained soil in full sun. They will not tolerate winter wet.
