Ninebark is a genus of deciduous shrubs that are valued for several reasons. They have pretty lobed leaves, which also come in purple and golden forms, and clusters of white or pink flowers in late spring. Also, their bark is usually peeling and attractively coloured.
There are ten species, mostly native to North America, with just one growing in northeastern Asia. They are found in forest clearings and dry mountainous regions.
They prefer full sun, but will tolerate some shade, although this can affect foliage colouration. They will grow in most soil types, providing they do not get very wet in winter. Pruning should be done after flowering to encourage more flowers in the next season, or in winter to maintain a good shape.
