Primroses come from a large and diverse genus, ranging from tiny alpine specimens to large bog-dwellers. The flowers come in a wide range of colours, from single to fully double.
There are some 430 species, native mainly to the northern hemisphere, with just two coming from the southern part of the world. They grow in a wide variety of habitats in the temperate or alpine regions.
The conditions required vary greatly with the species. Many do well in humus-rich, moist, but free-draining soil, often in part-shade. Others enjoy wet, boggy conditions, and the alpine varieties require a well-drained soil and full sun.
