These deciduous plants resemble an orchid and have clusters of delicate flowers, which are usually shades of purple or yellow.
There are about 17 species, native to the Himalayas and China. They grow wild in forests and on open hillsides.
They prefer humus-rich, but free-draining soil and dislike lime. Part-shade is ideal but sunnier spots are tolerated, providing the soil is moist.
