Soapworts range from low-growing, mat-forming alpine or rock garden plants, to taller varieties that will hold their own in a mixed border. Flowers are usually white or in shades of pink.
There are about 20 species, both annuals and evergreen and deciduous perennials. They are native to the mountain regions of Europe and southwest Asia.
All prefer full sun. Herbaceous forms require good garden soil, whilst alpine types need well-drained soil.
