Comfrey is a genus of ground-covering perennials, which includes the medicinal herb. They usually have rough, hairy foliage and produce attractive clusters of flowers.

There are about 35 species, which are native to Europe and western Asia.

Although they prefer part-shade, most will tolerate both heavy shade and full sun. Moist, fertile soil is best, but again most conditions are acceptable.
