Spiderwort is a clump-forming perennial, flowering from summer into autumn. It produces clusters of buds, held within its grass-like foliage, which open to give a succession of flowers. Colours include white, blue, purple, pink and red. Some cultivars have golden foliage.
65 species originate from North and South America, where they grow in woods, scrubland and meadows. Some are tender, although the varieties found in cultivation are fully hardy.
Ideally, they should be grown in moist soil and light shade, but will tolerate more sun, providing they are given enough moisture.
