Valerian is valued for its airy, white, yellow or pink flower heads, in early summer. They often have attractive foliage, which is usually scented, although this is sometimes unpleasant. The common name is also used to refer to the genus Centranthus.

There are about 200 species of annuals, perennials and shrubs, which grow in a wide range of habitats in most areas of the world, except Australia.

Most prefer a moist soil, in sun or part-shade. They are ideal for naturalistic planting, although some staking may be required for the taller varieties.
