LINUM
VIOLA odorata/Parma violets
VIOLACEAE
The common name Violet is used to describe both the hardy woodland varieties derived from V. odorata, and the more tender Parma Violets, which are closely related. All are prized for their sweet scent.
Most V. odorata varieties are single-flowered, although some double types are available. Many double varieties are often mistakenly placed in the Parma Violet group. True Parma Violets are from the Middle East and, as such, are tender and rarely offered.
They do well in part-shade, with humus-rich soil. Woodland conditions are ideal. Unlike other members of the genus, they are not repeat flowering, but produce just one flush of spring flowers.
