With their very variable patterned leaves and flowers with upturned petals, they are grown either as hardy garden plants or some forms tender indoor varieties.

The tubers can produce roots from the top, sides or bottom dependant on variety. Flowering time is also dependant on variety some flowering without leaves.

They prefer shade in free draining soil that has high humus content.
