About 200 species of mainly evergreen ferns, with a distribution that is worldwide.

The fronds are usually lance shaped, growing from rhizomes that are either short or creeping. The spores are held on different fronds from the normal growing fronds.

They prefer neutral to acid soils in a moist shady position.
