About 170 species of deciduous and evergreen shrubs and some small trees. They have distribution in Europe, north America and East Asia to the Himalayas.

The deciduous varieties have very conspicuous berries in the autumn that open to reveal the orange seeds. The evergreen varieties tend to be grown as good ground cover or trained up walls.

They are a very tolerant shrub with many garden uses for part shade or sun growing in most soils.
