Previously known as ASTER
Michaelmas Daisies flower predominately in late summer and autumn, and in a range of colours including white and shades of blue, lilac, purple and pink. Many varieties make good cut flower. There are also alpine varieties.
This is a large genus with some 250 species, found mainly in North America, but also in Europe and Asia. Most species are vigorous growers, which necessitates regular division of mature clumps.
Ideal conditions vary with the species, but they generally grow best in fertile, humus-rich soil, which retains moisture in summer. All varieties prefer alkaline soil, but it is only essential for some.
