CENTRANTHUS

CENTRANTHUS

CAPRIFOLIACEAE

Valerian is a valuable plant for dry, sunny spots. It blooms for a long period and attracts butterflies and insects. They seed freely and will naturalise in many situations. The common name is also used to refer to the genus Valeriana.

There are about 12 perennial species to be found across the Mediterranean, but only one is common in cultivation.

These thrive best in full sun and low-nutrient, dry, alkaline soils. Richer soils usually lead to vigorous leaf growth and poor flowering.
