Formerly known as Cimicifuga, these late summer/autumn flowering perennials are shade lovers.
There are 28 species from North America, Asia and Europe, mainly from deciduous woodland.
These clump forming plants appreciate dappled shade and good deep soils. Most have scented flowers and some varieties have attractive purple foliage.
Not all Actaea produce berries but the ones that do can be poisonous. This plant is not suitable for human consumption
