ASPARAGACEAE

Pineapple Lily is a bulbous plant that produces striking, strap-like foliage, which is often spotted or has purple-red colouration. Green, red-purple, cream or pale pink, star-shaped flowers are carried in tall spikes, topped with a cluster of foliage, hence the common name.

There are about ten South African species, native to mountainous grassland and marshy hillsides.

They need full sun and prefer a humus-rich soil, but it must be free-draining, as winter wet is not tolerated.
